2016  Co-Chairs:

Tomas Furlong (Herbert Smith Freehills)

Tomas is a Senior Associate at Herbert Smith Freehills in Hong Kong, where he represents companies, states and state-owned entities in disputes in the oil and gas, financial services, manufacturing and other industries.  He has advised clients regarding a wide range of commercial and public international law issues, in the English and Hong Kong courts and in arbitrations under all of the major institutional rules.  He looks forward to talking to anyone keen to get more involved in HK45

Robert Rhoda (Bird & Bird)

Robert is a partner in Bird & Bird's International Dispute Resolution Group based in Hong Kong.

He specialises in international arbitration and commercial litigation with a particular focus on the financial services, tech & comms and energy sectors.

Admitted in Hong Kong and in England & Wales, Robert has represented clients from a wide range of jurisdictions and under the rules of most major arbitral institutions.

Sheila Ahuja (Allen & Overy)

Sheila Ahuja is an Of Counsel in Allen & Overy's Global Arbitration group based in Hong Kong. She has advised on a wide range of arbitration matters involving various jurisdictions in Asia.  

 

Her recent experience includes advising BG and Reliance in arbitration proceedings exceeding USD5 billion commenced against the Government of India in disputes arising out of two production sharing contracts, and also advising them in related court proceedings; and appearing as an advocate in Singapore-seated arbitration proceedings in respect of refund guarantees issued by two semi-nationalised Indian banks.

 

Sheila spent six months at a leading International Indian Law Firm in 2011, working closely with their dispute resolution team on India-related arbitration matters.

Desmond Ang (Sidley Austin)

Desmond Ang is a Counsel at Sidley Austin’s Hong Kong office. His practice focuses on international commercial arbitrations, with an emphasis on high-stakes disputes involving business relationships and investments with companies in China, Japan and South Korea. He has represented clients in proceedings conducted under HKIAC, ICC, CIETAC, SIAC, JCAA, ICDR, and UNCITRAL arbitration rules. Desmond has experience in disputes involving mergers and acquisitions, price adjustments, scope of indemnities, trademark licensing, patent royalties, Sino-foreign joint ventures, general corporate issues, and private equity.

Jose Maurellet (Des Voeux Chambers)

Jose Antonio Maurellet, S.C is a barrister  practising from Des Voeux Chambers in Hong Kong.

 

He was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 2000 and was appointed a senior counsel in June 2016.

 

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Jose read law at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford. His practice is mainly commercial with an emphasis on company law disputes. He has appeared as counsel in ICC and HKIAC arbitrations as well as sat  as member of a 3 member panel. Jose is a native Cantonese and French speaker. He also speaks conversational mandarin.

John Rhie (Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan)

John Rhie is Managing Partner of Quinn Emanuel's Hong Kong office and the Head of the International Arbitration practice in Asia. John specializes in international arbitration, both commercial and investment treaty, as well as cross-border/international litigation and white collar crime.

In relation to international arbitration, John has acted as counsel and arbitrator in arbitrations under most arbitral institutions such as the HKIAC,ICC, ICSID, KCAB, LCIA, SIAC as well as ad hoc arbitrations around the world.

Kiran Sanghera (HKIAC)

Kiran is the Business Development Deputy Director at HKIAC.  She is primarily responsible for leading HKIAC’s activities in relation to China’s Belt & Road Initiative across the region.

Prior to taking her position in the Business Development Team at HKIAC, Kiran worked as Director of Litigation Funding at Harbour Litigation Funding where she was responsible for developing the third party funding market across Asia.  Kiran has also previously worked at HKIAC as counsel handling the administration of commercial arbitrations involving parties from Asia, Europe and the Americas, and  was responsible for promoting HKIAC’s dispute resolution services and Hong Kong arbitration in Latin America.
