The Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) has elected Teresa Cheng as its new chairperson commencing 1 January 2014.  Ms Cheng succeeds Huen Wong who has served as HKIAC chair since 2011.

Ms Cheng’s election comes at a time as HKIAC revamps its organization structure.  The HKIAC Council has established an Executive Committee, which will serve as the core body to direct the activities of the HKIAC.  There will be three standing committees under the Executive Committee and an International Advisory Committee will be set up to advise the Council where necessary on matters under the new HKIAC Rules, which will take effect on 1 November 2013.

Ms Cheng has been actively involved in the development of international arbitration in Hong Kong. She is also a Vice President of the International Council of Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) and a member of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) panel of Arbitrators, designated by the Chairman of the ICSID Administrative Council.   In 2008, she was the first Asian woman elected through a global election as President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).  Ms Cheng was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong in recognition of her public service to Hong Kong in 2011.  She is currently the Chairperson of Financial Dispute Resolution Centre, and has also sat as a Deputy Judge in the Court of First Instance of the High Court of Hong Kong.   Ms Cheng is a Fellow of King’s College, London, and the Course Director of the International Arbitration and Dispute Settlement Course at the School of Law, Tsinghua University.

“I believe Hong Kong has a strong international arbitration culture, a pool of experienced international arbitration practitioners, and many rising stars in the field.  With these invaluable assets, I will strive to further enhance our position as the pre-eminent international arbitration institution and to better serve our users during my term of office,” Ms Cheng said.

Huen welcomes Ms Cheng’s election.  He said, “I have every confidence in her that she is the perfect person for the position and we are truly excited about the new journey the HKIAC is about to embark upon under her pioneering leadership.”
