HKIAC Shanghai Office Completes its Re-Registration Process in Compliance with the 2016 PRC Law on the Management of Foreign Non-Governmental Organizations' Activities Within Mainland China

On 31 May 2017, HKIAC’s Shanghai Office registration under the 2016 PRC Law on the Management of Foreign Non-Governmental Organization’s Activities Within Mainland China (“2016 PRC Foreign NGO Law”) was approved. HKIAC is one of the first foreign NGOs to complete this process following the implementation of the 2016 PRC Foreign NGO Law which requires all representative offices of foreign non-profit organizations in the PRC to register with the provincial-level public security department.

The professional supervisory unit of HKIAC’s Shanghai Office, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce (“SMCC”), fully supported HKIAC Shanghai Office’s registration. On 29 June 2017, Acting Chief Representative of HKIAC’s Shanghai Office Ms. Carrie Shang attended the official appreciation ceremony organized by the SMCC and the district government, along with representatives of several other foreign institutions registered in Shanghai.

HKIAC has been particularly active in Shanghai recently. On 5 June 2017, HKIAC Secretary-General Ms. Sarah Grimmer, and SMCC Deputy Chairperson Mr. Weihua Shen met to discuss the activities of HKIAC’s Shanghai Office and the overall development of Shanghai as a venue for dispute resolution services.

On 2 June 2017, Mr. Christopher Moger QC and Professor Anselmo Reyes conducted Part II of the 2017 HKIAC Arbitrator Training Series - Managing the Arbitral Process in HKIAC Shanghai Office, thanks to the special help of King and Wood Mallesons (Shanghai). The training was well received and 40 Chinese arbitrators and arbitration practitioners with bilingual skills attended the training.

On 23 June 2017, Mr. Eugene Low (Hogan Lovells LLP) and Mr. Ning Yang (NTD Intellectual Property Law Office) spoke on topics related to online brand protection and domain name dispute resolution in HKIAC Shanghai Office, and the event was attended by more than 30 in-house counsels, thanks to the kind assistance of the Legal Executive Board.

Following registration, HKIAC’s Shanghai Office will continue to actively engage with the arbitration community and extend HKIAC’s world-class services to support its hearings on the mainland and provide such other appropriate services as permitted under Chinese law.

HKIAC’s Shanghai Office is currently located at PuFa Tower, 32nd Floor, 558 PuDong South Road, Shanghai, in the heart of the Lujiazui Financial City. It plans to launch an internship program targeting mainland law students interested in international dispute resolution practices later this year.
