If you’re interested in a career in arbitration, this seminar is for you! Come along and hear from lawyers in private practice and in-house about what it’s really like to work in the field. And hear different perspectives about what other career paths are open to arbitration lawyers, from acting as secretary to tribunals, working at an institution such as the HKIAC, appearing as counsel, taking on the role of arbitrator and even being appointed as a High Court judge!

Panellists include Teresa Cheng SC (barrister and arbitrator), Chiann Bao (Secretary General of the HKIAC), Simon Chapman (Herbert Smith partner), and Olga Boltenko (Tribunal Secretary). They will share their experiences, anecdotes and top tips about pursuing a career in arbitration. The panel will be chaired by Frances van Eupen (Allen & Overy partner and co-chair of HK45).

This promises to be a lively and insightful seminar and there will be an opportunity to mingle over drinks afterwards. There will also be a raffle open to those attending, with a chance to win a ticket to the ADR in Asia Conference on 27 October 2015. HK45 will also invite expressions of interest to take on the role of secretary to the HK45 committee. And you can find out about other ways of getting involved in the local arbitration community.

  • HKIAC Arbitration Supper Club - Supper at Home with Chiann Bao

Chiann Bao and Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre cordially invite you to an informal BBQ at the Secretary-General’s home during the evening on Saturday 15 August 2015. Please RSVP by 11 August 2015; as space is limited, successful RSVPs will be notified on 12 August.

Chiann, the Secretary-General of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), is well known to all arbitration practitioners in Hong Kong. As Secretary-General, she functions as the chief executive of the HKIAC and oversees the administration of over 600 arbitrations, mediations, adjudications and other forms of dispute resolution proceedings at the HKIAC.

This will be the eighth HK45 Arbitration Supper Club. For a less inhibited discussion, Chatham House rules apply and the young lawyers must be less than 10 PQE (no partners). Our previous guest arbitrators have been Teresa Cheng, James Spigelman, Yves Fortier, Lord Hoffmann, Gavan Griffith, Doug Jones and Neil Kaplan.

The supper's other traditions will continue and we will aim for a diverse guest list at each dinner – those from law firms, the bar and others with an interest in arbitration are all welcome to enjoy an informal dinner and informative discussion of arbitration issues (and anything else that comes up). For more information or to sponsor a future Arbitration Supper Club please contact tomas.furlong@hsf.com.

HK45 and Linklaters are delighted to invite you to a casual BBQ and drinks on board the Linklaters junk. As space is limited, we will be sending you a confirmation email and payment details if you have successfully registered for the event.

Court proceedings in breach of agreements to arbitrate remain common in many parts of Asia.  As a result, the anti-suit injunction is an important tool for commercial arbitration counsel. The panellists at this seminar will consider the legal and practical issues arising in relation to anti-suit injunctions in the region including the powers of courts, arbitral tribunals and emergency arbitrators.

  • HKIAC’s Next Top Model Clause

Confused about this season's latest trends? Unsure what would look best in your arbitration clause? This is understandably so. Courts in several leading centres of international arbitration, including London, Singapore and Hong Kong, have recently taken divergent approaches to the core issue of the law governing the arbitration agreement. For users of arbitration, this development raises the possibility of dissimilar outcomes depending upon the approach taken by the courts where an arbitration is seated. Don't be seen with last year's clause – join our expert panel in breaking down the cases in order to examine the practical impacts of recent decisions, and explore their views on the steps the HKIAC has taken – and what arbitration users can do - to proactively manage this developing risk.
